School Board Approve 2022-2023 District Calendar
City school students will have two less class days during the 2022-23 school year.
There will be 178 class days next school year, which allows for two additional professional development days. Superintendent Keith Davis said the extra days will allow teachers to review strategies and make adjustments for students still reeling academically from learning loss during the COVID pandemic.
“We felt strongly that there needed to be more opportunities for teachers to study data and make adjustments through the year for the students,” he said. “We still have along road ahead of us in dealing with the academic setbacks of the past year-and-a-half.”
Classes for the new school year will begin on Aug. 4 with a fall break starting on Oct. 17. The students will be out the week of Nov. 21 for Thanksgiving, followed by the Christmas holiday break from Dec. 19 to Jan. 4. There will be a winter break on Feb. 17 with students returning Feb. 21 after President’s Day. Spring break is scheduled for March 27-31. Graduation will be May 25. Missed days for weather will be made up when school is not scheduled to be in session.
Davis said the calendar was devised through a committee and voted on by system employees with 75%in favor. As for the summer, Davis said there will once again be a district-wide summer school divided into two semesters for all students in grades kindergarten through 12th who are in need of academic remediation.
“We have to put emphasis on reading and math to address loss in those areas, so the summer will mean a lot of remediation,” he said.
