Sheffield City Schools to Offer STAR Day Camp to Children of Essential Employees
Sheffield City Schools Special Activities Day Camp
The Sheffield City Schools recognize and appreciate that many Sheffield citizens are working on the front lines of the battle to prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus and to provide necessary services to the public. School closures have a major impact on these workers and the SCS wants to support these workers by providing childcare for their children ages 6-12. In response to this need, the Sheffield City Schools Special Activities Day Camp has been established based on the authority granted by paragraph 4.b of the Order of State Health Officer Scott Harris dated March 19, 2020. Sheffield City Schools will operate a Special Activities Day Camp during the state-mandated closure of public schools.
The Sheffield City Schools Special Activities Day Camp will begin on Monday, March 30. It will operate from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday – Friday. Registration will begin Wednesday, March 25. Eligible parents may register online or pick up a registration form at L.E. Willson Elementary between the hours of 8:00 – 3:00.
Parents or legal guardians may send their children to the Sheffield City Schools Special Activities Day Camp subject to the following conditions: Eligibility to attend this Special Activities Day Camp is limited to children of essential employees of the following categories of employers: State and Local Government, First Responders (including EMS and Fire Services), Law Enforcement, Hospitals, Nursing Home/Long Term Care Facilities (including Assisted Living and Specialty Care Assisted Living Facilities), End Stage Renal Disease Treatment Centers, Pharmacies, and Grocery Stores.
The Special Activities Day Camp will be limited to students who are currently enrolled in Sheffield City Schools and children of employees who are working at the Special Activities Day Camp. The Special Activities Day Camp is limited to children from 6 to 12 years of age.
Each classroom will be limited to a maximum of 10 students with one teacher in each classroom. Therefore, Sheffield City Schools reserves the right to limit the number of children who are permitted to participate in the Special Activities Day Camp. SCS has complete discretion to determine which of the eligible children will be permitted to participate in the Special Activities Day Camp and has complete discretion to establish criteria to prioritize which children will be admitted in the event of limited capacity.
There will be a nurse assigned to the Special Activities Day Camp. Employees or students who show any symptoms of an illness will not be allowed to attend the camp.
At this time, there will be no fee or tuition to enroll children in the Special Activities Day Camp. However, the SCS reserves the right to unilaterally alter this policy and impose a fee or tuition should it determine the circumstances so dictate; however, any such change would not be retroactive, but such fee or tuition would only be effective going forward if it were imposed.
SCS has a zero tolerance policy with respect to disciplinary infractions by children. SCS retains full discretion and authority to remove any child from the Special Activities Day Camp if it determines in its sole discretion that the child’s behavior is detrimental to the other children or the employees. The SCS School Board will have full discretion to terminate the Special Activities Day Camp at its will and without having to demonstrate any cause.
Applicants for the day camp will be contacted once the registration process has been completed.
