Sheffield students were picked up from school and taken to four different locations for after school tutoring by local volunteers. The screened volunteers participated in training to teach reading to the elementary students. Select students will participate twice a week for nine weeks. The goal is to improve academic achievement for these students. Researchers say that students not reading at their grade level by the end of third grade are four times less likely to graduate. The program is a wonderful way to connect school and community. After an immediate greeting with smiles and snacks one student said, "I already like it here!"
