Aim High Mentoring is a social service provided to the "at risk" students in the Sheffield City School system.  The overall goals are to have a postive impact on the students' personal development, increase self esteem, raise awareness of personal potential, improve behavior management skills and to decrease child abuse risk factors while increasing protective factors for each student served.

 According to the National Mentoring Partnership, mentored teens are:

46% less likely to less likely to get into drugs.

59% more likely to get better grades.

73% more likely to raise their goals.

Big Brothers Big Sisters School-Based Mentoring found:

64% of students developed more positive attitudes toward school.

58% achieved higher grades.

60% improved relationships with adults.

56% improved relationships with peers.

55% were better able to express their feelings.

64% developed high levels of self-confidence.

62% were more likely to trust their teachers.

77% of teachers, parents, and volunteers involved in the pilot programs reported increases in students' self-confidence.

The Sheffield City School system is committed to helping children "be all they can be." We believe the Aim High mentoring program is a positive thing for our students and our community. As a citizen of this community you and other caring individuals CAN make a difference in the life of a child and this community. Many opportunities are available within the school system for you to provide additional support to a child. The only skill needed is the ability to care for another human being.

• The Aim High Program is sponsored in part by the Alabama State Department of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention (Children's Trust Fund). This organization sponsors programs throughout the state of Alabama.
• Sheffield City Schools and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Shoals have partnered to administer our Aim High school-based mentoring program.
