Sheffield City Schools are commited to helping students make healthy food choices at school. Our hope is that students will develop lifelong habits that reduce obesity and other chronic diseases.
Eating a healthy breakfast and lunch should be an important part of our lives and we strive to teach this to our young people. Encouraging our students to eat nutritious meals in the cafeteria is our way of helping develop these lifelong eating habits. Eating a well balanced meal at both breakfast and lunch will help our young people to perform at their maximum potential in school.
Free and reduced priced meals applications are available for students who qualify Applications can be picked up in each school office or at the board of education.
The National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs are regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Traditional Food Based Menu Planning System is used to plan school breakfast and lunch menus. Offer Vs. Serve is implemented at all schools K-12 at both breakfast and lunch. Pre-K students are not given a choice unless requested by a parent and/or guardian.
Definition of Offer Vs. Serve: At breakfast students must take 3 out of the 4 food components. At lunch students must take 3 out of the 5 food componenets. Students may decline any food tiems and may take a smaller portion of the declined food item. Each meal must be priced as a unit. A student pays the same price whether he/she takes the minimum or maximum of food items, or a smaller portion of the declined food item.
We appreciate all of you who participate in our schools' breakfast and lunch programs. We strive to provide tasty, healthy meals to our young people. Your participation is the key to our success.
