School Nurses are a vital link to the academic success of your student. Health Services are provided by licensed nurses, LPN's and RN's, at each campus within Sheffield City Schools. Statistics prove healthy students learn better. Our mission is to provide your student with nursing care and health education which prepares them to reach their optimum potential and goals in life. PARENT ALERT Your child should remain at home or may be sent home if he/she is experiencing any of the following illnesses: FEVER - child with temperature of 100 or above should remain at home until he/she is fever free for a full 24 hours and does not require medication to keep the child fever-free. NEVER GIVE CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18 ASPIRIN UNLESS DIRECTED BY A PHYSICIAN. VOMITING - child should not attend school if they have vomited in the last 12 hours. Offer a "BRAT" diet - bananas, rice, applesauce & toast - for the first few meals after vomiting. Avoid milk products for 24 hours & encourage clear fluids (water, flat 7-up or ginger ale, Gatorade). - DIARRHEA - child should remain at home if he/she has had diarrhea in the last 12 hours. Follow the "BRAT" diet & increase fluids until diarrhea has stopped.
RASHES - unknown/undiagnosed rashes should be reviewed by a medical provider. Proof of non-contagious status may be required for school attendance. COUGHING/CONGESTION - students with coughing that requires narcotic medication to control should stay at home until medication is not required. Students with coughing or congestion that results in the inability of the child to perform at optimum level should remain at home until their condition is improved. - COMMUNICABLE DISEASES - any communicable disease will be handled according to the Health Department &/or Centers for Disease Control guidelines.
Allowing your child to stay at home when ill reduces the amount of time required for their recovery & reduces the chance of others becoming infected. Proper handwashing is the best way to prevent illnesses. Consult a physician if you have any questions.
