HIPPY - Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters
Sheffield HIPPY Program Serving Parents of Preschoolers

HIPPY is a research-based program that works with families in the home to support parents in their critical role as their child's first and most influential teachers. HIPPY is designed to help parents prepare their three, four, and five-year old children for success in school and in life.  By empowering and enabling parents to become (and remain) actively involved in their children's education, HIPPY helps maximize this investment and improve outcomes for children in elementary school and beyond.

In 2007 Sheffield was awarded an exploratory grant, which provided a partnership with HIPPY USA. Since that time, approximately 25 families have been served each year.  The program is housed at 507 East 8th Street, Sheffield, Alabama. (Adjacent to Threadgill Primary School).

Research shows that an investment in early childhood education pays long-term dividends for children, their families and our community, including:

  • Improved school readiness
  • Better grades and higher test scores
  • Increased likelihood of graduating from high school
  • Better educated workforce
  • Higher economic productivity
  • Increased employment and earnings
  • Reductions in crime and delinquency
  • Lower costs for public health, special education, juvenile and adult justice systems and more
